MUFG

Location: Amsterdam, World Trade Centre.

When Japanese bank, MUFG, sought to create a modern, hybrid-friendly environment in the Amsterdam World Trade Centre, they approached Woodalls Design to deliver the project due to their reputation for sustainable and innovative workplace solutions.

Embracing the essence of modern hybrid working, Woodalls set out to create a vibrant and functional environment that honored MUFG's Japanese heritage.

Nestled across the expansive full level 5 floor and a snug section on level 3, the project presented an exciting challenge which saw the Woodalls team repurpose the use of space in these areas. Level 5 became a dedicated employee level with a central social café space, while Level 3 shifted focus to a client facing area.

The new level 5 workplace seamlessly balances innovation and functionality. With a move away from assigned desks and a focus on social interaction, it promotes flexibility and connectivity, aligned to MUFG's evolving hybrid work culture. State-of-the-art technology integration, ergonomic furniture, versatile seating (including sit-stand desks, round desks, and touch-down benches), collaborative workstations, and inviting meeting spaces are all tailored to accommodate the dynamic needs of a hybrid workforce.

The dedicated client-facing area of Level 3 boasts an elegant boardroom, and client-facing meeting rooms with sophisticated aesthetics. Additionally, clever folding doors open up to accommodate town hall meetings and events for up to 100 people.

Incorporating sustainable practices, natural materials and locally sourced elements were expertly integrated  into the space. The colour palette shifted away from the primary brand red to more sophisticated and earthy tones of burgundy, green, and beige, creating an elegant backdrop that exuded warmth and style. Drawing inspiration from MUFG's Japanese origin, the design radiates simplicity and minimalism. Organic shapes and nature-inspired motifs subtly reference the brand's heritage, while the blend of oak wood, linen and wool upholstery add a touch of tranquility to the space.

The main challenge for Woodalls was the existing ceiling which was costly to change so the team had to work around this to ensure the new layout aligned to the existing infrastructure which required precise planning and execution.

Woodalls successfully transformed the environment from a siloed and cellular workplace with traditional assigned workstations to an open plan, hybrid working environment, that fosters connectivity and embraces flexibility. The resulting space aligns with MUFG's vision of a warm, open, and inviting office that caters to diverse working styles and honours the brand's Japanese heritage. The refreshed environment stands as a testament to adaptability and creativity, setting the stage for a bright and collaborative future for MUFG in the heart of the Amsterdam World Trade Centre.
